Develop your child's potential

Children love to move and make music! The Music School of Delaware’s distinguished Early Childhood program engages children’s natural creativity and self-expression in age-appropriate activities that provide a solid musical foundation for future study.  The activities also support critical areas of child development, such as cognitive reasoning, motor skills, self-esteem and social interactions. The comprehensive curriculum features Kindermusik® and Musikgarten as well as introductory classes for various instruments and is taught by a group of compassionate, playful and highly trained educators.  In addition, each Early Childhood student receives two complimentary tickets to a Music School Family Concert of your choice, plus $10 off the price of a Kindermusik® birthday party at the Wilmington Branch!  (Contact the front desk for concert and birthday party information.)

A parent/child orientation is required for all families and takes place during the first scheduled class of each semester. Wilmington Branch classes begin the week of September 13–18, 2010; Milford Branch classes begin the week of September 20–25, 2010.



HOW TO REGISTER

Complete the Early Childhood Registration Form and the Materials Order Form and return both forms to the appropriate branch with the $75 nonrefundable deposit. The deposit is applied to charges on your bill, including the registration fee, tuition, materials fees, etc. Your application will be processed once all forms and payments are received. Registration confirmation is mailed directly to you and any discounts will be applied at the time of billing.

Additional classes may be added if needed. All class times/teachers are subject to change. The Music School reserves the right to cancel classes due to insufficient enrollment.

Increase your child’s curiosity about and aptitude for music!  In this delightful program, adults and babies—lap babies, crawlers and walkers—will establish a foundation for singing and musical thought. Activities aid in baby’s holistic development, including developing listening skills and sense of beat, with home materials that allow parents to continue exploring music and documenting baby’s growth and development.

KINDERMUSIK SIGN & SING®

Sign language can ease frustration and enhance long-term learning abilities for hearing children, too!  Using research-proven methods shown to speed development, this class combines singing, dancing and playing instruments to teach more than 100 signs your child can use to communicate with you.
ENROLLMENT: One or both sessions
TUITION: 1 child: $170 per 10-week session; 2 children: $255 per 10-week session

MUSICAL MOVERS & SHAKERS: Kindermusik Our Time®

Prepare your child for successful learning at school and in future music studies through activities that bridge the natural connection between movement and music. Your child’s musical aptitude and listening abilities are enhanced and developed through singing, chanting, movement activities, instrument exploration, listening, dancing and interactive story time.

PRE-SUZUKI MUSIC & MOVEMENT
2½ to 3½ years, with parent/caregiver (Melinda Bowman)

Considering enrolling your child in the Suzuki Academy? Meeting every other week, this group music class establishes a strong musical foundation in pitch recognition, steady beat and rhythm patterns; builds a music repertoire based on classical, folk and Suzuki music examples; and introduces children to instrument options for future study.  Through singing, creative movement, focused listening and playing simple instruments, your child develops fine and gross motor skills, the ear and the ability to concentrate—all essential for success in the Suzuki Academy.
ENROLLMENT: One or both semesters
TUITION: $136 per 8-class semester (biweekly)

MUSICAL EXPLORERS: Kindermusik Imagine That!®
3 to 5 years, parent/caregiver attends last 15 minutes of each class (Music School faculty)

Encourage your child’s inherent creativity! By combining pretend play activities with singing, playing instruments, storytelling, listening, movement and literacy, this class enhances your child’s overall development, strengthening fine motor skills, coordination, listening ability, vocal development and social skills, while also increasing familiarity with basic music concepts like rhythm, pitch and timbre. An instrument demonstration by a professional musician is included each semester.

YOUNG MUSICIANS PROGRAM: Kindermusik for the Young Child®
Year I: Wilmington, Pike Creek, Middletown
4¾ to 6 years; parent/caregiver attends last 10 minutes of each class (Music School faculty)
PREREQUISITE: Children must turn 5 years by December 1, 2010; those joining for only the second semester must be in kindergarten

Year II: Wilmington
6 to 7 years; parent/caregiver attends last 10 minutes of each class (Music School faculty)
PREREQUISITE: Children must have completed Year I or be in 1st grade

Your budding musician will learn the necessary basics for future music classes, ensembles or private lessons in this four-semester sequential curriculum. In a pressure-free, developmentally appropriate environment, children explore families of the orchestra, prominent composers and multicultural music while learning to play glockenspiel, dulcimer and recorder. The program uses singing, ear-training, guided listening, creative and structured movement, ensemble work and learning musical notation to nurture comprehensive musicianship and offer a developmentally sound approach to music literacy, while also building symbolic thinking, concentration, memory and self-expression.

OTHER CLASSES FOR THE YOUNG CHILD


GROUP PIANO FOR CHILDREN
7 to 9 years (Joan Fasullo)
Wednesdays, 6:00-7:00 p.m.
Starting September 22; Wilmington

Formal piano lessons in a group setting! Through movement, games and creative discovery, children learn to play the piano and read music from the very first lesson, establishing a secure foundation for ongoing piano study. Classes include music theory, technique, sight-reading, composing and ensemble playing, with strong emphasis on expressive playing. Every fourth week between 5:00-7:00 p.m., students have a 20-minute private lesson (in lieu of group lesson) to reinforce concepts from group lessons.
PREREQUISITE: Readiness assessment with instructor; daily access to a piano required
ENROLLMENT: Entire academic year
TUITION: $258 per 15-week semester

INSTRUMENTAL DISCOVERY
Grades 1 to 3 (Margaret Love)
Wednesdays, 4:00-5:00 p.m.

Identify your child’s musical interests and strengths through this exploratory class.  Children experience in-depth introductions to a variety of musical instruments—including voice, violin, flute and piano—before deciding on a specific instrument for private study. Each class includes instrumental or vocal group instruction as well as games and activities that enhance basic musicianship.
ENROLLMENT: Entire academic year
TUITION: $274 per 16-week semester
MATERIALS: $48 instrument rental per semester

EXPLORING MUSIC THROUGH SONG
6 to 8 years (Melinda Hudson-Oriani)
Wednesdays, 5:15-6:00 p.m.

Let your child’s voice ring out! Children will explore their first instruments—their sweet voices—with vocal techniques, warm-ups, vocal play, melody patterns and pitch and tonal development. This class provides an excellent musical foundation for children who are interested in future choral participation and serves as a bridge between music and movement classes and chorus.
